Asalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!

Welcome to the Shortening Distances Hijrah Guide for Madinah, Saudi Arabia, which will, bi’ithnillah, take you step-by-step through the process of planning, moving, and settling in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, long-term.

Here we will touch on the basics of Visas and Residency, Business Establishment, Housing, Schooling, Healthcare, Family Activities, Transportation, and Costs of Living. Visas and Residency (↑)

Saudi Arabia offers various types of visas and residency permits to accommodate different needs.

  • Tourist visas are available for individuals wishing to explore the Kingdom’s rich culture, historical landmarks, and modern attractions. These are typically valid for up to 90 days within a one-year period.
  • For work, Saudi Arabia issues employment visas, which are often linked to the employer and can lead to residency under the Iqama system. Residents holding an Iqama enjoy access to services like healthcare, education, and banking, while also being able to sponsor family members.
  • Recently, the Kingdom introduced the Premium Residency Program (Saudi Green Card), which provides expatriates with additional benefits, such as the ability to own property and establish businesses, without requiring a local sponsor.

Whether visiting or settling, it’s essential to understand the rules and requirements for visas and residency, as these can vary depending on nationality and purpose of travel.

Business Establishment and Investment (↑)

Establishing a business in Saudi Arabia has become increasingly accessible thanks to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy and attract international investment. Foreign investors can register their businesses through the Ministry of Investment (MISA), formerly known as SAGIA. The process includes obtaining a commercial registration, securing necessary licenses, and setting up a bank account.

Saudi Arabia allows 100% foreign ownership in many sectors, making it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and corporations. Key industries include tourism, technology, manufacturing, and renewable energy. The government also offers incentives, such as tax breaks and access to economic zones like NEOM and the King Abdullah Economic City, which provide world-class infrastructure and resources.

Business owners must adhere to Saudi laws, including compliance with the Saudization program (Nitaqat), which requires hiring a certain percentage of Saudi nationals. Overall, with its strategic location, robust infrastructure, and pro-business reforms, Saudi Arabia offers significant opportunities for business establishment and growth.

While starting an investment in Saudi Arabia requires careful planning, compliance with local regulations, and tapping into opportunities created by Vision 2030.

The government provides free education to Saudi citizens from primary school through university, and expatriates can access both public and private schools, the latter offering curricula like British, American, and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.

The education system emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, with a growing focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Saudi universities, such as King Abdulaziz University and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), are internationally recognized for research and academic excellence.

In addition, vocational training programs and initiatives like the Human Capability Development Program aim to prepare students for the modern workforce. Scholarships are also available for Saudis to study abroad, while international students can benefit from exchange programs and initiatives to promote cultural exchange. Education in Saudi Arabia is evolving rapidly, making it a dynamic environment for learners and educators alike.

In Regard to Islamic Education, Islamic studies are a cornerstone at all levels, focusing on Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh (jurisprudence), and Islamic history. Specialized Islamic schools and universities, such as Dar-ul-hadeeth and the Islamic University of Madinah, cater to students pursuing advanced religious studies.

The healthcare system is divided into public and private sectors. Public hospitals, managed by the Ministry of Health (MOH), offer comprehensive services, including specialized care and advanced treatments, at minimal or no cost for nationals. Meanwhile, private healthcare facilities are known for shorter wait times and high-quality services, attracting residents and medical tourists alike.

Recent reforms under Vision 2030 aim to increase privatization, improve efficiency, and promote preventative care. Digital health initiatives, such as telemedicine and mobile apps like Sehhaty, are transforming how patients access care. With state-of-the-art hospitals, a strong focus on medical research, and a growing pharmaceutical sector, Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system continues to evolve, ensuring quality care for all.

Perhaps, you will share in the reward of everyone who is encouraged by this information and successful in performing Hijrah sincerely for the sake of Allaah. I encourage everyone to read the Tafseer of Imaam Ibn Katheer (Rahimahullaah) for Soorah an-Nisaa’, 4:97-100.

Wa ‘alaikum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu.

      Bārak Allāhu Feekum, sister!

Yes, it is possible for a sister to migrate to Madīnah on her own. If she is a US or UK citizen, she can simply stay on a long-term tourist visa. Otherwise, she can get a residence permit as long as she is under 60 years old.

I ask Allāh to facilitate all your affairs and to bless you with residence in the blessed city of al Madīnah.
